Pedro Martinez took another step in the rehabilitation of his strained left hamstring when he faced hitters Wednesday in his first simulated game in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Martinez threw 55 pitches over four innings, prompting general manager Omar Minaya to say: “We’re encouraged by his progress.”
Martinez should pitch in another simulated game in five days, but he will throw in the bullpen before then, as he would if he were in the rotation.
Martinez tested the hamstring defensively when he fielded a bunt and had to run to cover first base.
“When you’re dealing with hamstrings, all areas of movement are concerns,” Minaya said.
Martinez has been on the disabled list since April 2.
