Interim manager Jerry Manuel had predicted Luis Castillo would be activated Saturday, ending a seven-week disabled list stint for a strained left hip flexor. Instead, after a pregame meeting with Manuel and third base coach Luis Aguayo that day, the second baseman agreed to temporarily remain inactive.
The major issue: Mets officials had been so pleased with the play of fill-ins Damion Easley and rookie Argenis Reyes, they didn’t want to disrupt it. That was the case even though Castillo is in the first season of a four-year, $25 million contract.
“We brought him in and had a conversation,” Manuel said. “He felt that if given a few more days that he would be much better prepared, also saying that the team is playing extremely well without him.”
